CRYPTO 2004Local Information |
The conference will be held on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. The campus is located adjacent to the Santa Barbara airport and the Pacific Ocean in Goleta; free shuttle bus service from the airport is available for those attendees staying on campus only (those staying in hotels will need to secure their own transportation from the airport and to/from the University). Reasonably priced accommodations are available in the university residence halls for participants and their registered guests. Children under the age of 13 are not allowed to stay in the dormitories, so those bringing younger children will need to make separate arrangements in one of the nearby hotels (see Hotels, below). Parking on campus is available at no cost to participants who reside on campus, but a permit must be requested on arrival. Smoking inside campus buildings is prohibited.
Important: Bring a sweater and/or jacket. Santa Barbara can be cold at night. (This is crucial for the beach party!)
See a map of the UCSB Campus and of the Goleta area.
The UCSB campus is located approximately two miles from the Santa Barbara airport (code: SBA), which is served by several airlines including American, America West, Delta, United, and US Airways. Complimentary shuttle bus service will be provided between the Santa Barbara airport and the campus beginning on Saturday for early arrivals and is available on the last day of the conference as well (and also for late departures on Friday). All major rental car agencies are represented in Santa Barbara. AMTRAK also has rail connections from both San Francisco and Los Angeles. There is also a bus that runs from LAX to Golita (this stops 1 mile from UCSB). Santa Barbara is approximately 100 miles (160 km) north of the Los Angeles airport and 350 miles (560 km) south of San Francisco. Information about the weather in Santa Barbara can be found here.
For those who choose not to stay in the dormitories, the following is a partial list of hotels in the area. Those who choose to stay off campus are responsible for making their own reservations. Early reservations are advised, since August is a popular season in Santa Barbara. Blocks of rooms will be reserved until June 15 in the Pacifica Suites, Holiday Inn, Best Western South Coast Inn, Ramada Limited, Hotel Oceana and TheUpham Hotel & Country House.
Note that Goleta is closer to UCSB than Santa Barbara is to UCSB, but a car will probably be required to travel between any hotel and the campus. All prices are subject to change and do not include a 10-12% tax; prices should be confirmed by calling the hotels directly. Mention Crypto 2004 at UCSB when you are making your reservations, since at the following hotels you will be eligible for the university rate, which can be a significant savings. PLEASE NOTE: rates for Friday and Saturday night stayovers are significantly higher. The quality of the hotels ranges from rather expensive beach-front resorts to basic, inexpensive accommodations.
