Membership meeting Wednesday April 16, 2008 President Preneel opened the meeting at 4:40pm, giving a brief overview of the IACR, its conference/workshops, etc. Treasurer Handschuh gave a summary of the IACR's finances. There was a round of applause for Ron Rivest, who donated (via the Marconi foundation) $75k to the IACR. Preneel gave a report on the behalf of Membership secretary Halevi. Preneel then gave a list of the upcoming IACR conferences and workshops. He asked for a straw poll on the following questions: Who would be in favor of moving CRYPTO? 29 Who would be against moving CRYPTO? 24 Preneel gave a report on behalf of JoC editor Maurer. Preneel gave a report on behalf of Newsletter editor Hughes. A member (Graveman) asked why PKC and TCC'08 are available (for a fee) through the Springer website, before they are available in the IACR reading room. Preneel responded that it was not a policy for there to be a delay, and that he would take up this matter with the appropriate people. A member (Smart) commented that it might be useful to add a paragraph to the IACR's draft statement containing statistics (gathered via google scholar, etc.) to support the claim that our conferences are still of high quality. A member (Desmedt) commented that we could have pre-proceedings and post-proceedings. Preneel gave a report on current board activities. The floor was opened for discussion: o A member (Yung) suggested that we should consider e-publishing, or some other (non-Springer) avenue of publishing our papers. Preneel responded that we are aware of the reduced value-added, and that he would take this issue to Springer. A member (Bernstein) commented that he felt that the value-added was "negative" Handschuh asked, what is the reason given by Springer that they don't want to release the copyright to our older workshop papers? (These they may already be out of print, i.e. Springer is no longer making money from them.) A member (Clark) responded that Springer has helped some in this regard, but that the process is complex and that overall Springer had not been terribly forthcoming or helpful. The membership gave a round of applause to Andy Clark for his many years of service to the IACR. The meeting was closed at 5:25pm
