EUROCRYPT 2015

Rump Session

Please find the programme here

The Eurocrypt 2015 Rump Session will take place on the evening of Tuesday April 28th.

  • Do you have breaking news, progress reports, or other topics of interest to the cryptographic community?
  • Can you keep your talk short and entertaining?

The Rump Session is where people show off their talents, present breaking news, humorous takes on the subject, or in rare cases either present their rejected Eurocrypt submission, or present work under submission in the hope of influencing the committee.

Last year's Rump Session was chaired by the Head of Typography for the prestigious Snake Oil Crypto Competition, that well known craptologist Kenny Paterson. Speaking to his local newspaper in a moment of stunning honesty, Kenny said "I'm deeply honoured to be invited to chair the rump session at EuroCrypt 2014. I can only imagine the previous incumbent did a really bad job, because my previous attempts to run this session were a complete disaster too." This year he is back, with a vengeance: reinforcement arrives in the person of past rump session quiz master Martijn Stam. They will both be known as the senior rump-session co-chair, but if a distinction must be made, one of them may be referred to as supersenior.

To encourage people to submit humorous talks the "Best Paper" at the Rump Session gets invited to submit to the Journal of Craptology. However, in true Olympic spirit, it is not all about winning, it is also about participating. Sometimes just being on stage, silently in the limelight, will bring its own reward.

So to ensure the Rump Session is as good as previous years we require your contributions. To request a talk slot at the Eurocrypt 2015 Rump Session, fill out the form below before Monday 27th April 2015, 23:59 UTC.

Some submissions may have to be rejected or shortened because of time constraints; please remember that the Rump Session is meant for short and entertaining presentations. We will only be accepting a very limited number of TALKS (if any) related to any conference/meeting announcements or job adverts since these types of announcements are now well served by the IACR's online Calendar of Events and Open Positions in Cryptology web pages. However, if you want to submit ONE SLIDE for such events then we will display these during the break of the Rump Session.

To avoid endless, dull and boring fussing around with opening and closing files, or worse, uploading files or changing laptops en plein public, there will be a single laptop with all the presentation slides glued together (similar to last year). If you plan to give a talk without slides, or if you do not have slides ready yet, please prepare and submit one slide stating your name and talk title.

Submission format: Only PDF and PPTX formats are supported. All submissions for talks should start with a title page containing a preferably funny, possibly anonymous picture of the authors and a TLA (three letter acronym) from the cryptographic literature for the audience to guess. To ensure that what is being presented is as close as possible to what the rump co-chairs believe they have reviewed, we reserve the right to modify slide sets.

Very importantly we have four Categories for you to pick from.
  • Eurocryptsgottalent, for those of you who want to perform a song, dance with a bear, or show off some other amazing talent.
  • Craptology, for those of you aiming for funniest presentation.
  • Paperplug, for those with serious results, try to keep it lighthearted nonetheless!
  • Advertisement, for those wishing to advertise open positions or upcoming events. Unless this is crapworthy, you might end up anonymously during the toilet break!!

The Abstract field must be used to submit the following information:

  • A brief summary (not for publication)
    • We have found a bias in the bit 1.
    • I can securely crowdsource the cloud.
    • I will be mounting a live cold feet attack on my own rump session presentation.
    • Our result is indistinguishable from being obfuscated.
  • Requested duration of your slot in minutes; if you request more than 7 you may not understand the concept of a Rump Session
  • Explanation (kept strictly confidential, ahum) of why this talk belongs in the Rump Session: In order of decreasing interest to the Rump Session Committee these are...
    1. Chocolate: only good quality may bribe the Rump Session chairs.
    2. Track Record: I have won multiple 'best crap' prizes.
    3. Post-post Resistance: This work will live on long after the galaxy has ceased to exist.
    4. Sequel/Prequel/Reboot: Part of a series of Rump Session talks.
    5. Serious Filler: This is just a neat result I felt like sharing.
  • Freshness of your result:
    1. The force awakens: who knows whether it will be any good?
    2. The phantom menace: The result has been accepted for some major conference already and I wanted to get the preparation of my slides out of the way.
    3. A new hope: This is a Crypto or CHES submission and who knows it might still be a contender. This is my attempt to sway the program committee.
    4. Dark of the Moon: Actually, I gave a longer talk about this at a major conference in a galaxy far far away, so let me try to rattle it of 10 times faster.
    5. Revenge of the Fallen: This result really should have made it into the main program, but for inexplicable reasons it has not.
    6. Age of Extinction: This result keeps being rejected from conferences, you are my only hope.

Submission server: We will be using the usual conference submission software for submission of your Rump Session slides.

Online updates of slides for previous submissions will be accepted until midday on Tuesday. Updated slides will not be accepted on USB sticks or by email!!!
