Accommodation and Location

Conference Hotel

The conference takes place in the Roxburghe Hotel Charlotte Square, Edinburgh EH24HQ, tel +44(0)131 240 5500. The historic nature of the Square means that signs for the hotel are very small. The entrance to the hotel is a few yards along Charlotte Square from George Street, going in the direction of the castle. Here is a map of its location. We hope to be allowed to put the large "CHES" poster on the railings outside the entrance so that it is easy to find.

Rooms can be booked either by telephone or by e-mail: phone Carina Massachs (Groups Co-ordinator) on +44 (0)131 527 4678 or send her an e-mail using sales.roxburghe@macdonald-hotels.co.uk Quote "CHES" for the special conference rate of £105/£130 (approx €152/€188) per night for a single/double room including breakfast. (Taxes are already included in this price - generally in the UK the price you see is the price you pay.) An upgrade to an "executive" room is possible for an extra £25 per night.

Rooms at the conference rate are available from Sunday night (28th Aug) and for as many days after the conference as people wish to stay. A block of rooms has been reserved for us until Sunday July 17th. Delegates who wish to stay in the conference hotel should book no later than that date.

Pollock Halls

There is cheaper alternative accommodation at The University of Edinburgh Pollock Halls of Residence. Prices are given and booking can be done through the web pages.

Private bus hire has not been arranged as the normal public buses should cope easily with the numbers booked into Pollock Halls.

The best public transport buses to the conference hotel are:

Note that the roads have changed slightly at the West End (of Princes' Street), immediately next to Charlotte Square. Queensferry Road now opens into Princes' Street, and some buses have been re-routed to avoid Charlotte Square. As of Aug 9th, Lothian Buses has not yet updated its web page details to show these changes.

Bed and Breakfast

There is a very extensive network of bed and breakfast accommodation within one or two miles of the hotel. Use any search engine on the internet and pick one on or near a bus route. (There are many near Pollock Halls.) The tourist boards have web lists. As the conference approaches, accommodation may be more difficult to find. In this case, phone up the Tourist Board (+44 (0)845 2255 121), which knows which accommodation still has rooms available.

The Travel Inn
