You will work on the project “Practical Data-intensive Secure Computation: a Data Structural Approach”. This is a project funded by the EPSRC. The aim of the project is to investigate how data structures can be used as an efficiency and scalability booster in the context of secure computation. The project has a particular emphasis on putting theory into practice. The project will investigate both data structures and cryptography.
You will design novel cryptographic data structures and associated protocols for efficient secure computation, as well as apply them in domains such as cloud computing and data mining in order to solve real-world security/privacy problems. Other responsibilities include: writing papers, presenting work at international conferences, and contributing to an open source software package. There will be opportunities to collaborate with industrial research labs and other leading universities.
The candidate must have:
* a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area;
* a strong background in cryptography/security;
* good programming skills (C++/Java, parallel/GPU computing experience is a plus).
* good communication and time management skills.
Experience/knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be desirable but not essential: computer networks, operating systems, databases, statistics and data mining.
The post is available from now. The post is based in the Security & Resilient Systems (SRS) Group within the School of Computing Science. The School is one of the Academic Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR) in the UK. In the latest 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment, the School ranked 9th overall and 1st for Research Impact among computer science departments in the UK.

We are starting a project in which we will develop methods for the verification of proofs in quantum cryptography. Similar to what the EasyCrypt tool does in classical cryptography. The scope of the project covers everything from the logical foundations, through the development of tools, to the verification of real quantum protocols.
The ideal candidate would have experience in:
- Semantics
- Theorem proving
- Verification of classical cryptography
- Quantum cryptography
- Quantum computation / communication
Of course, expertise in all those areas is very rare, so candidates who are strong in some of those areas and are interested in the others are encouraged to apply!
Please contact Dominique Unruh if you have more questions about the project, the required background, Estonia, the position itself, or the application process.
The salary range is 30000-36000 Euro per year (depending on experience), which is highly competitive in Estonia due to low costs of living and low income tax rate (20%), pension contributions and health insurance are covered by the employer.
The position is for three years, as soon as possible till August 31, 2020. The starting date and duration can be negotiated (in both directions).
To apply, please send the following documents to unruh (at) ut.ee:
- Curriculum vitae (please explain your scientific background)
- List of publications
- Research plan (i.e., how do you think you could contribute to the topic)
- At least two letters of reference (please ask for the letters to be sent directly to us)
- Phd degree

S1: Usable Abstractions for Secure Programming - A Mental Models Approach: Cryptographic application programming interfaces (APIs) are currently widely used to provide security of communication and information flows in contemporary applications. Existing research has highlighted that vulnerabilities arise in software due to misunderstanding about the guarantees provided by API functions or unintentional misconfiguration of relevant security parameters. However, little is understood about developers’ mental models that lead to such issues and the misalignment between these models and the actual functionality the API as intended by developers. The aim of the studentship is to study developers’ mental models of security APIs and to understand any misalignment with correct API usage.
