Project: We are building an end-to-end framework that automates the specification, verification, and deployment of cryptographic protocols for multi-agent systems. LLM-driven agents explore the design space, synthesise protocols for specific security needs, and formally verify them (e.g. ProVerif, Lean) with machine-checkable proofs, exposed through the Verified Agentic Interaction Substrate (VAIS).

Essential
- Doctorate (or nearing completion) in Cryptography, Computer Science, Mathematics or related, specialising in applied/theoretical cryptography.

Cryptographic proof systems allow a prover to convince a verifier that a computation was performed correctly. These systems have applications in secure cloud computing, verifiable machine learning, and privacy-preserving technologies.
However, many proof systems require the prover to use significantly more time and memory than the original computation. The research will develop new proof systems with reduced time and memory overheads, making it practical to verify the integrity of large-scale computations efficiently.
Requirements-MSc (or equivalent) in Computer Science or Mathematics (or another relevant field)
The ideal candidate would enjoy using a mixture of algebra, combinatorics, and probability to analyze and optimize algorithms. Strong background in one or more of the following areas is valuable:

Context & Objectives: In the context of global encryption standardization (e.g., NIST calls), evaluating the security of block ciphers is critical. Recent advances have shifted manual cryptanalysis toward automated constraint models. However, current tools (like TAGADA or CLAASP) only solve isolated sub-problems, requiring manual complexity compilation. This PhD aims to unify these steps into a single framework to optimize global attack complexity directly and find finer security bounds on established or forthcoming ciphers.
Core Research Axes:
- Fully Automated Differential Attacks: Merge separate attack phases into a single model using generic solvers to optimize global complexity instead of sub-problems.
- Improving Truncated & Boomerang Attacks: Implement new constraint types directly into the core of CP solvers to improve abstraction quality and refine theoretical bounds.
- Solver Scalability: Leverage structural patterns of encryption algorithms to guide solvers, reducing resolution times from months to days on high-round ciphers.

INSA Lyon, France
The CITI Lab at INSA Lyon in France is looking for a PhD student to carry out cutting-edge research in privacy-preserving Federated Learning (FL).
FL enables collaborative model training without sharing raw data, preserving privacy by exchanging model updates instead. However, FL remains vulnerable to privacy leakage, poisoning attacks, and challenges from client heterogeneity. Secure Aggregation techniques, such as Homomorphic Encryption, improve privacy, while defenses like anomaly detection and robust aggregation enhance security but often increase computational costs. Asynchronous FL (AsyncFL) improves scalability by processing updates as they arrive, and Buffered AsyncFL helps maintain privacy by aggregating updates in batches. Despite its benefits, FL can be energy-intensive, motivating sustainable approaches such as fog computing and communication-efficient protocols. The proposed SURPRISA-FL framework addresses these challenges by combining privacy preservation, Byzantine robustness, asynchronous participation, and energy efficiency.
This fully funded position has a 3-year duration, with a negotiable start date.

Communication over the internet is susceptible to surveillance and censorship. Privacy preserving communication techniques (e.g., Tor, Nym, Snowflake) allow users to circumvent such surveillance and censorship. The research scope would include designing, analysing and implementing such systems; additionally, studying different attacks and countermeasures are expected to be part of the research method.
Privacy-preserving computation outsourcing allows users to outsource computation tasks to a cloud server without revealing to the server anything about the user data or even what kind of computations the user is performing. There are different techniques for such privacy-preserving computation outsourcing such as Trusted Execution Environment (e.g., Intel SGX) and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (TFHE, BGV). Furthermore, the specific functions/tasks can be subject to attacks, and identifying attacks and countermeasures is expected to be studied. The research method will be a combination of system studies, design, and experimental research.
The position is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).
